What is nipah virus?

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus—meaning it spreads from animals to humans—that belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. Its natural reservoir is fruit bats (flying foxes), and humans can become infected through:

• Consumption of contaminated food (e.g., raw date palm sap)
